Personal Time with today’s  Gospel

Matthew 4: 1-11

For a few moments, reflect quietly on some questions. They do not have a right or wrong answer but help us to go more deeply into the Word of God.

  • Why was it important for Jesus to go into the wilderness to reflect on what it meant to be the Messiah?

  • How did Jesus’ temptations actually help him to work out what God was calling him to do?

  • Why was it reasonable for Jesus to be tempted to turn stones into bread? (For himself and for others). And what did he learn by reflecting on it?

  • Why do you think Jesus was tempted to prove he was the Messiah by jumping off a high building and seeing if God would save him? And how did his choice deepen his understanding of God’s will for him?

  • Why do you think the devil thought there was any chance of Jesus’ agreeing to worship him? And how does this reflect what happens to many people given great power?
