……..Soon the faithful were making their way

In unhurried dribs and drabs

Nodding to their neighbours

In respectful silence ……

To group about the family resting place.

…….And on their many ways

Walking between fervent histories

Whose names and faces etched in stone

Gathered up the fabric of their minds

With timeless memory of him and her

That painted happy pictures in their lives

Gave them pause or prompted them to dream

Of other days when dancing feet were wild

Or moments that would leave them with a tear.

…….The crackle of a speaker

Proclaim the Entrance Antiphone

In the name of the Father and of the Son

And of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Response after response

Echoed the now familiar words

Till each exchanged a handshake or embrace

A holy communion each with each

And then the suffling queues

To feel the soothing Eucharist in their hands

Never a time of such affection again

Blending the scent of summer flowers

Gently between the living and the dead.
